Only 49 Schipperke Registrations 2010

.

Mary Deats writes in her Breed Notes in Dog World on 25/2/11

THE LATEST Breed Records Supplement, as always, makes for interesting reading. Schipperke registrations for 2010 were slightly down on the previous year, with just 49 registered. This low number makes our breed in the utility group the most ‘vulnerable’ for loss of CCs given the equally low entries at championship shows. The last quarter of the year had only six registrations from two litters and one importation from the Republic of Ireland. The quarterly registrations for 2010 were twenty four, ten, nine and six, indicating that a lot of people appear to like having puppies in the earlier part of the calendar year.

With the gradual decrease in the numbers of puppies in the breed it is no surprise, therefore, to see in the latest Kennel Gazette that our breed continues to be classified as a stud band A breed for next year and presumably for quite a few years to come.

Ms Dorothy V Seaton has died

.Miss Dorothy V. Seaton (Seacross), 84, a major force in the world of Schipperkes, lost her battle with cancer and died peacefully on Monday, January 17th. The funeral service will be held on Friday, 28 January at All Saints Parish Church, Bedworth, Warwicks, at 3:30, with cremation at Nuneaton Crematorium at 4:30. Refreshments will be served at Parish Church following the cremation.

It is with great sadness that I report the death of Dorothy. I have known her from before my teenage years, as I was a Saturday kennel girl for her boarding kennels. I went to visit her in hospital with Diane Forknall (Avidore Schips) shortly after Christmas, and it was Diane who phoned with the sad news. When we know any more about where any donations are to be sent (rather than flowers) I will post it here, and on Facebook.

Duchess figurine sells for over £900

.OLD NEWS?

I had th t.v. on in the background today and an old Bargain Hunt (circa 2004) came on. They went to the auction rooms Gildings in Market Harborough for their sale of the items. Whilst there Tim the presenter flagged up a little Beswick figurine. It was called Duchess , and it was the little dog in Beatrix Potter’s story The pie and the Patty Pan. I nearly fainted as I had been searching the internet for dog figurines of Schipperkes a couple of nights ago!

Needless to say the sale took place, the figurine was estimated at £600 to £800 as it was VERY RARE. It made £920.

Beatrix Potter's Duchess

Beswick Beatrix Potter Figure, Duchess with Flowers – Gold Oval Backstamp (Black dog, multicolored flowers). Modeled by Graham Orwell, issued 1955 – 1967. Size 3.75”H

What struck me about the figurine was that it definately did not look like a Pomeranian!

Searching for more I also found-

Beswick Duchess with Pie

A Schipperke in Beatrix Potter Book?

.

Duchess the SchipperkeThe Pie and The Pan by Beatrix Potter

If you read the ‘Schipperke’ page in Wikipedia it states that;

“Beatrix Potter, English author of the Peter Rabbit books, created a story called The Pie and the Patty Pan with a Schipperke named Duchess, who receives an invitation to tea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_the_Pie_and_the_Patty-Pan

However when you click on the link and read about this story, they declare it is about a Pomeranian calle Duchess who is invited to tea.

The plate from the book is reproduced here and indeed it does show a little black dog, and you could say it does look like a Schipperke, albeit with a tail. But is it a Schipperke or a Pomeranian? I must confess I know very little about Beatrix Potter or the animals she kept. She may of had a Schipperke, but would it be undocked at that time?

Could it be, however, that the link between Beatrix Potter and Schipperkes is in fact the ‘Tarnhows’ connection. According to the Visit Cumbria website-

“in 1930 bought the Monk Coniston Estate – 4000 acres from Little Langdale to Coniston – which contained Tarn Hows, now Lakeland’s most popular piece of landscape.”

I await the debate with interest.

How have your Schipperkes coped with all this snow?

.Luckily Schipperkes are little black devils so they are easy to find in a snow drift. But do please spare a thought for our friends in Scotland and the north of England; some who have had to put up with the snow since mid December.

Tell us your experiences of this cold snowy winter.
